Learning from your mistakes

As I mentioned on my previous post, I got a serger from the CNE. I really wanted to give it a try right away, and decided to make something with it. Something simple and quick.

The result: this skirt. (It's made with polyster/spandex knit. Sergers are great with knit fabrics, aside from all the other stuff you can do with it).
Skirt pattern is McCalls 6654.

Was it was easy as I'd hoped? Nope, because it wouldn't be me without hiccups along the way. This was technically the second skirt I made. See the first one below. Can you see what I did?
I sewed the casing for the elastic waistband the wrong way. It's inside out!
I also didn't stretch the casing enough when sewing it around the waist, that the skirt bunched up on one end.

The good thing with making booboos is that you find out (albeit the hard way sometimes) how not to do something..like, don't sew things inside out especially on a serger. >.<

On the plus side, I finished the dress that I'll be wearing to the Fan Expo this year, and this dress was sewn without a hitch. Here's a preview:
Stay tuned:)

Your tip made me laugh: don't sew things inside out seems like excellent advice!

I've always wondered if there is a way of making a t shirt shorter using a sewing machine, because the fabric is knitted. And yes we all learn from our mistakes!

You can't go wrong with a basic skirt. Accidents or not I'm still jealous of your skills. I'm so bad at sewing my home ec teacher finished my project for me out of exasperation, haha.

I feel like if I were sewing anything, it would bunch up! But that Betty Boop dress is going to look pretty cute on you.

It was a learning experience, for sure. This looks great though!

Booboos are to be expected with your first try but it sounds like you were able to sort it out pretty quickly. I spy Betty Boop! Looking forward to seeing that dress!

An overlock machine is a godsend! I hardly use mine anymore, but really need to. You look great Emmy, and that Betty Boop fabric is my favourite. Took some time off but Will be back soon! Happy weekend. x/Madison

My uncle has a shop where he sells vacuums and sewing machines. I wouldn't know what to do with a sewing machine if I tried

Trends could be born from mistakes. I actually like the first one. I should dust my sewing skills and get to work. You look great in this skirt Emmy.

Your second skirt turned out beautifully! And at least once you've made the mistake once you won't make it again I guess! :) That print for your dress looks so fun too by the way :)
