Restoration

My husband has had this "desk" for a long time...even before I met him. It was owned by his old room mates, and he ended up keeping it. We've been using it as a TV stand.

Guess what? This is actually a vintage sewing machine, y'all! A Singer Fashion Mate 252, which was made around the late 1960's/early 70's.

You see...my hubby actually learned how to sew before I did. He used to hem his own pants, which was why he thought he'd be able to use this. However, he never got it to work properly.

Now that I've been sewing more, we decided that maybe, I could get it to work. I never did get the chance to take a pic of the machine's state before all the work was done. It wasn't too bad. His room mates had it serviced after buying it so the motor runs, and no major work was needed. It needed cleaning and oiling, however, and several parts needed replacement.

I ordered the parts on SPO. (I highly recommend this site. Quick shipping to Canada.) Then, I got to work.

After a few hours of work, this baby now runs. A very basic machine (only does straight and zigzag) but man, it's built like a tank and does the stitches amazingly.

And now, here's my sewing space with all my machines, where all the creating happens:D

Speaking of creating, here are my latest makes:
Sweater I knitted using the Vogue Knitting For Cat Lovers pattern, along with an old skirt I sewed using the Tilly and the Buttons Clemence skirt pattern
Sewed another ballet leotard
And I finished the little one's costume for Halloween. Here's a preview:)
Anyhoo, are you a vintage lover?

PS Just wanna wish  my fellow Canucks a Happy Thanksgiving!

It's wonderful you could restore it and get it working again! I think old stuff is relly built to last!

Hope you've had a great weekend :)

They don't make things like they used to. Great that the old sewing machine could be brought back to life and added to your creative corner. Your daughter certainly seems to be enjoying her new goodies hand made by mama :) That cat sweater is just darling! I collect vintage Kodak Brownie cameras. Sadly none of them work though.

That's so cool that it's also a sewing machine AND that your husband learned to sew before you did. So cute!

That's so cool you got it working again, it's such a fab thing to own. I love seeing the things you've made, how lucky for your daughter that she gets to wear these unique, handmade clothes. Can't wait to see what you made for Halloween! x

I remember seeing one of those at my job. I can't imagine having such a vintage piece in my craft room. You are so talented, Emmy! And your daughter is too, too cute!
So great that you hung onto it for so long. And that it's still going strong. Most "vintage" things are much like that.

Wow you have so many sewing machines! Do you use them all or do you tend to use the same one most of the time? Love your new creations! I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving too.
I think it is so awesome that your husband once sewed! He's amazing Emmy! I'm so glad you could order parts for that machine and get it working. They don't make machines like that anymore. I find old anything was made much better than this newer stuff. Love your daughters cat sweater, leotard and that Halloween costume looks so cute. I can't wait to see the big reveal. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

My Granny had a table/singer like that!! Different color. Idk what happened to it, but I think it's still in her house (now owned by my uncle). The sewing died out with her, and I miss that.

How wonderful that your husband has had this all these years. I grew up with my mum's industrial Singer sewing machine like this in our house, it was my nan's so I know it's a great one to have. I love vintage, of course! The little one's outfit is just adorable. xx/M Take care, Emmy.
I bet you're saving tons of money making those clothes yourself! I've never thought it possible to make a leotard! I thought they just kind of magically appeared fully formed.
Dang, Emmy, your husband sew too?! I should hang my head in shame in the corner. I love that your husband kept it after all these years and you guys now got the sewing machine running. And I can't wait to see what costume you sew for your little one.
