Masking it

It has been advised (in Canada, anyway) that wearing non-medical masks is recommended if you are out and about (especially if taking public transportation or going grocery shopping) to avoid spreading the covid19 virus in case you are one of those asymptomatic ones.

Honestly, our family does have those disposable ones in that you can get in stores, but I thought I'd sew some anyway since they are so easy to make and are also more environmentally-friendly as they are re-usable.

And soooo.....thought I'd share how I made them.

I used the video from Joann's. Super easy to make (although I did the pleats differently).

Here's some pics of the process:

I cut all the fabric and interfacing all at once to make it easy to sew them all together. I used quilting cotton, as it is tightly woven enough, and is comfortable agains the skin. The interfacing acts as the filter.

ironing the interfacing to the fabric

sewing the pleats

The finished masks
My hubby trying it on

Here's my daughter and I wearing the original ones I made. I didn't do the pleats but made them custom-sized to our faces:)

I just want to say again that these are not medical grade and are not meant to replace the N95 masks.

Even if you don't sew, these are super easy to make even by hand.

Have you tried or have made these masks before?

These masks look great! It's nice you can do this! Our government has reminded us if we stay far away from people we don't need masks, and to keep them for the sick people, but I have seen a lot of people wearing them at the store and I tried the no sew handkerchief turned mask thing and that worked so if they do change the rules I will wear one of them. We only leave the house to get groceries, just until they are able to get online delivery back up and working again, once they have that we won't have to leave so I didn't want to buy a mask that someone else may need - and I can't sew at all to make my own, haha!

Hope that your week is going well :) Another week of working from home here!

I haven't been leaving the house but Bryan has some masks for work, if he needs them. Love your daughter's mask pattern

The ones you made look really fantastic! This is definitely a time where your insane sewing skills come in handy! I haven't been able to find any masks to wear (which is okay for the most part since I do not leave the house ever) but I do feel like I need to try to DIY my own just in case. Thank you for this! Fingers crossed I can whip up something passable. Just in case I need to venture out at some point.

Thanks for this ideas
Look at you getting your craft on chingu. Even a fabric mask is better than nothing given that they really seem to help with prevention in other parts of the world and we should be leaving the N95 masks to our healthcare workers. Of course yours came out great. My mom gave us some neoprene masks which we have been using whenever we go out which is not much.

Oh these look way more comfortable than the mask I wear. I was hoping to turn my bandana into a mask, but I can't find it. And yes, it's been advised that we wear masks here in the states, too.

These looks amazing. I saw a tweet with a version of folding up a square piece of fabric and using hair ties on the ends. I passed it onto my mum who has been using this method every time she leaves the house. I wish I could say I've been doing the same but lately it's all felt like such a lost cause on me anyway. The only time I do leave the house is for work and I did try the disposable mask and gloves and wipes (not sure if they kill coronavirus germs but they're labelled as killing germs...) but my wipes ran out quickly (within one day and no way of getting hand sanitiser anywhere) and gloves kept breaking on me (could only manager to get "food grade" whatever that means) while at work. Then I started noticing how just because I had gloves on I was still touching my bag with those gloves. Pulling out my work tablet ant touching the screen to take photos or enter data with those gloves. Touching my pen to sign in and out of stores with those gloves. Reaching for my car keys and car door with those gloves. It all feels pointless. Sorry to sound like such a downer here, for me it was all giving me so much anxiety. I don't bother with the mask anymore, sometimes even the gloves. I really try to limit what I am touching in the store but it's all futile when people around you don't respect the social distancing rules. Crowding aisles, standing in the middle, not bothering to move aside even though they see you standing at a distance, watching you and waiting for you to move aside! Ahhhh! I do love your creation. I love that you've added interfacing for some legitimate protection here. Something like this may just change my mind again.

Stay safe and I hope you and the fambam had a lovely Easter
